Setting Up Yoast SEO Configuration Wizard

Although the creators of Yoast SEO strive to make it beginner-friendly, it is likely new users need help with using it. If you are new to Yoast, one of the first things you have to do is enter information correctly into the configuration wizard.

Using the Configuration Wizard

Install Yoast SEO. Access the dashboard by clicking on the SEO tab in the WordPress dashboard. First-time users will receive a notice saying, ‘First-time’ SEO configuration.’ Clicking on the link for configuration provides a guided tour to help with setting up the basic SEO settings.

Click the link. On page one of the wizard, click ‘Configure Yoast SEO.’ In this area, choose Option A, unless working on a development website. Here are tips for completing each section.

Site Type

Choose the type that closely matches your site.

Organization or Person

Choose whether the site represents an individual or organization. Organizations have to enter the name and logo. The logo must be at least 112 x 112 px. A square logo is recommended. Those choosing ‘Person’ enter the individual’s name and all social media profiles for the site.

If the website is created for an organization, enter the organization’s social media profiles. The details, such as the user’s name and description or the social profiles of an individual, can be edited. All social media profiles do not have to be entered, only those that you wish to promote actively. The section helps provide information to Google for generating a Knowledge Graph Card. The cards are eye-catching. Every bit of information is helpful.

Search Engine Visibility

This section allows users to choose whether certain content types can be indexed in search engines. It is nearly always best to leave what is there as the defaults. Only someone who really knows what he or she is doing should make changes. The defaults are ‘Yes’ to showing ‘Posts’ and ‘Pages.’

  1. Multiple Authors

  2. If the user is the only person writing on the website, Yoast SEO automatically marks the author archives as noindex to keep from duplicating content. On a single author blog, 100 percent of the author’s files are identical to the author’s blog index page. If multiple authors will write content, choose ‘Yes’ to allow people to find the post archives os a specific author in the results of a Google search.

Google Search Console

This is a tool Google uses that allows users to view information about how a site works in a Google organic search. Those using Google Search Console can allow Yoast to import information. Click the ‘Get Google Authorization Code’ and enter the code here.

The Google Search Console can be skipped if the beginning user is unsure about using it. It is something that should be investigated eventually, but Yoast SEO doesn’t need it to function.

Title Settings

The Title is the main headline appearing in Google search results and browser tabs of visitors. Yoast SEO makes your title by default. You choose your website name and the ‘Separator,’ such as a hyphen, asterisk, or one of the other symbol choices.

The Last Three Sections

In the next two sections, Yoast SEO will ask if you want to sign up for their newsletter or purchase plugin training, keyword research training, or Yoast SEO Premium. None of that is necessary unless you choose to do so. Keep hitting ‘next’ until you arrive at Section #10. Close the wizard, and you have completed the task.
